The synagogue, located in the Four Temples District, was built on the initiative of Jakub Silberstein in 1829. It was the first temple of liberal Judaism. In 1905, an outside staircase and new balconies were added. During the Second World War the Nazis turned the synagogue into a car garage and a warehouse for stolen goods. After the war, in 1974, the synagogue was handed over to Wroclaw University. It was to house a magazine and newspaper reading room. Later, the building was taken over by the Wroclaw Academy of Music, which removed the roof and sold the building to private owners in 1992. In 1996, following arduous efforts of the Jewish community, the synagogue returned to its rightful owners. Now it belongs to Orthodox Jews. Work is underway to restore the synagogue to its former glory. It will be used as a place of worship and a Judaic museum. More about White Stork Synagogue
