Teatr Muzyczny Capitol
CAPITOL MUSICAL THEATER
The theater is located in the buildings of the pre-war CAPITOL theater and movie house. The pre-war complex, designed by Berlin architect Friedrich Lipp and built in 1929, consisted of three integral parts: a 1200-seat auditorium, a hotel and an administration building. Expressionist in style, the complex was unique in Europe. With its glazed brick elevation, shiny outside walls, modern equipment and decor, it was listed by all contemporary guidebooks as one of the most beautiful theater and movie houses on the continent. Sadly, during the Second World War the theater lost its frontage and several floors. Much damage was also done by remodeling the building in the style of social realism. In 1989-90, the complex underwent extensive renovation. Since then, the theater and movie house has been a listed building. In 1997, a flood caused significant damage to the equipment and walls of the first floor and basement. Today, the completely renovated Musical Theater, offering a wide variety of productions and events, is one of the prime venues on the cultural map of Wroclaw.
