Alim Qasimov, critics agree, is today one of the most talented singers in the world. He is a master of mugham—modal singing popular in the mountains of Caucasus, as well as among the Turkish-speaking nations of the Middle East. The folk traditions of this regions paired with Mr. Qasimov’s vocal skills create a distinctive and unforgettable expression.
Azerbaijani mugham is on the UNESCO list of Non-material and Verbal Heritage Masterpieces.
Azeri folk tradition called Mughan joins the performance of expressive and melodic song with the accompaniment of various types of flutes and string instruments. Although Azerbaijan is at the gates of Europe, its musical tradition is closely linked with Iran. Mr. Qasimov’s recordings are great example of Azeri music, both with its energy, and strength of its expression. The impressive singer, Mr. Qasimov, will perform three short mugham songs (their Middle Eastern modal structures resemble Indian rags) and one long piece, where he will be accompanied by tar lute, kamancha, and bendir. The lyrics mostly include classical love poems.
In 1999, the artist was awarded the prestigious international award, IMC/UNESCO Music Prize, and the Folk Roots magazine hailed him “one of the greatest singers of the XX century.” They praised him for “the pure passion of his singing.” Qasimov also participated in a musical project organized by Yo Yo Ma, a famed American cello player. This project, called “Silk Road Project,” focused on presenting the most impressive folk music of the Silk Road countries.
