Throughout the centuries, Macedonian music has been the meeting point of traditions from neighboring countries. The turbulent history of this country is reflected in a diverse and intricate musical culture. Bistri Vodi calls attention to authentic traditional folk songs. Simultaneously, the band manages to reach and explore in these songs the unique nature of Macedonia.

Macedonian folk music interweaves elements of Greek, Turkish, Bulgarian, Albanian and Gypsy musical cultures. The influences of Slavic, Byzantine, Christian and Islamic cultures are also clearly identifiable. The early beginnings of professional Macedonian music are tied to Byzantine music; in other words, an unrestrained development of liturgical music in the Orthodox Church was stigmatized only by a centuries long Turkish dominance. At the turn of XIX and XX centuries the musical culture broke free from foreign influences.

Formed in 2005, Bistri Vodi has eight members. The main aim of the artists is the search for and revitalization of the surprisingly rich musical traditions of Macedonia. Their repertoire is composed of folk songs that show the oldest layer of Macedonian traditional music. The performers present both ritual songs and those that punctuated the order of daily routines and which were traditionally divided between the sexes and addressed to women, or men. A number of these songs is performed a capella, others are accompanied by music and dances.
