The Eights from Poznan are legends of Polish student theater and pro-democratic opposition that was active in the 1970s and 1980s. They are also the oldest counterculture theater still existing in Poland. The time of mothers, in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of July ’56 in Poznan, is a very rich play, full of subtle poetic imagery, which takes over the viewer’s memory and imagination.

“This is an attempt to present the tragic history of the twentieth century from the perspective of women. Women who bring children into this world, only to watch their senseless death. A series of poetic images presents the cycle of life: sexual fulfillment is followed by pregnancy and delivery, period of nursing, the child’s first games, and finally a brutal passage into adulthood. At the end of this road, a man in an army clothes is waiting. He is playing golf, yet instead of golf balls, he uses soldiers’ helmets. His laugh carries through emptied fields all the way to Mickiewicz Square, where fifty years earlier, the story has began. (…) The time of mothers fits well with the context of the Theater of the Eight Day’s earlier work, especially with The Ark, which was a moving depiction of wandering experienced by millions of exiled around the world. This is a theater, which came into maturity out of contestation of totalitarianism and defended the victims of the regime, today seeks to defend all victims.”
Roman Pawłowski, Gazeta Wyborcza

The Eights’ use of space in the nature, their way of building metaphors with clear, strong scenes, and finally their ability to incorporate aspects of street theater expression puts them in the class of their own. The time of mothers is in honor of women who in pain bring children into this world and in pain mourn their offspring. They mourn the children killed on all world wars from the moment of our origins till now.
