The Vakhtanguri group performs songs from their home region of Guria in the Western Georgia. Even nowadays, this region is a melting pot of many cultures, in which we can observe entwining influences of Roman, Persian, Turkish and Russian art. Consequently, the musical tradition of that region with its diversity has been seducing audiences for centuries. The highly professional performance of this music, which we have the pleasure to see, impresses professional singers and audiences alike.

Georgian polyphonic singing is on the UNESCO list of Non-Material and Verbal Heritage Masterpieces.

In the East bordering with the Black Sea, Guria is a region, where the mixing traditions of many cultures brought extraordinary music. The majority of songs form this region are a great example of contrasting polyphony with three independent and well developed voices. It is not rare to hear in Georgian music four-voice polyphony. Of special interest might be a type of yodeling, called krimanchuli. The latter is accompanied by gamqivani, a counter voice. These elements give the songs of Guria individual, unique and easily recognizable quality.
