A Filetta. Polyphonic Easter Mass
A Filetta was founded in 1978 by the 13-year-old Jean-Claude Acquaviva and they have been bringing the passion, emotional fervour and beauty of this art to audiences around the world ever since. Like the fern from which they take their name, A Filetta are deeply rooted in the Corsican soil. In Corsica, when someone leaves the island and forgets his roots they say "S'e' scurdatu di a filetta" (he has forgotten the fern). You'll never forget A Filetta. Today Corsican polyphony is world renowned – this is thanks to pioneers such as A Filetta. Corsican polyphony is based on three parts. The lead is given by the secunda, who is joined by the lowest voice, the bassu, while the terza, highest of the trio, provides the ornamentation. When the voices of the singers are perfectly in harmony, a fourth voice appears from everywhere and nowhere – the voice of the angels. The sacred use of polyphony is primarily associated with death: funerals and mourning, which are still deeply celebrated in Corsica. Such laments are also used as the chants for the Easter rituals where Christ's procession to Golgotha is re-enacted, where a true penitent takes the role of Christ and is by this action redeemed. As in the rest of Europe polyphony is much used in the Christian mass and there are many polyphonic masses, both traditional and modern. But elements of Corsican culture stretch far back beyond Christian times. It is from this rich ground of history, myth, tradition and song that A Filetta draw their inspiration, basing their original compositions on their deep investigation into the traditions of their homeland. timeless voices, which sow their seeds on the furrows of terzetti, madrigals, liturgical chants, paghjelle radiate a burning poetry, a wild spirit that makes listening to their songs a unique experience. At this year's Brave festival A Filetta will perform Corsican Easter Mass. Their repertoire will include chants sacrés, among others: Sanctus, U lamentu di Ghjesu and Sanctus.
