Divna – Old Byzantine hymns and psalms
Serbia
Divna . Orthodox Liturgies. The Crystal Sounds of Byzantium.
Born in 1970 in Belgrade, Divna Ljubojevic, was 'discovered' as a little girl by Mother Agniya – the Mother Superior of the Vevendenje Monastery. Since then, she has been taught the art of Orthodox liturgical singing by the nuns who preserved these unique songs from Karlovatz and who painstakingly cherished this ancient tradition of singing. Divna was quick to develop a passion and a genuine talent for these sacred convent songs. Having finished the Mokranjac High School of Music in Belgrade and graduated from the Novi Sad Academy of Music, Divna Ljubojevic dedicated herself to studying sacred songs from the Byzantine traditions of Serbia, Bulgaria and Russia. But her main focus is on leading her own ensemble – the Choir and Studio of Sacred Music Melodi – which she has established together with her friends. This musical group, which works in various forms, performs Byzantine sacred music, ancient and modern monodic songs, as well as “angelic songs from God.” Divna performs songs from the religious repertoire, combined with masterpieces of secular and modern music, using her unique vocal techniques. In a ceaseless search for absolute purity and perfection, she works on the oldest Byzantine monodic and polyphonic chants - Serbian, Greek and Slavic - in order to revive this specific style of singing, now replaced by the 19th century Russian songs performed in the churches of Belgrade. She has won awards at many international competitions. In 1997, encouraged and supported by the Orthodox bishop Luka, she established a choir at the Saint Sava Church in Paris, as well as the other choir groups which she conducts in France, England, the Netherlands and other countries, at the same time supervising her Melodi choir which is her key artistic undertaking.
