Irkutsk Ensemble Authentic Music. Siberian Lamentations. Survived Rituals of the Angara Delta
Known for their innovative virtuoso performances of traditional Siberian folk songs the Ensemble for Authentic Music led by Artistic Director Alexander Rogachevsky was founded in Irkutsk, Russia in 1988. The group performed during the Brave Festival in 2005 where they presented a collection of songs from the region of the Angara river basin. Villages in that region were submerged during the building of the Irkutsk, Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk hydroelectric power station in 1960. This chamber Ensemble represents the unique singing tradition of the Russian settlers who have lived around Lake Baikal in Siberia since the 17th century. The plethora of ancient songs collected by the ensemble through numerous field expeditions to Siberian villages, as well as those recovered from private and public archives encode little-studied parts of Slavic history and mythic traditions including information on how to live in harmony and peace with nature, God, and each other. Unlike other folk groups the Ensemble aim to present the traditions of this regional music in their full authenticity, i.e. in an ethnographically precise manner, staying true to tradition in both interpretation and performance. This year’s festival audience will have a unique chance to listen to prayer-songs traditionally sung during funerals and on All Souls’ Day. The Ensemble will perform chamber songs of supplication, songs of confession and laments from Siberia. The Ensemble group members have been gathering this ancient material for years through participation in traditional funerals and ceremonies in memory of the dead. Part one of the performance will be devoted to songs of supplication which are used to join together the world of the dead and the world of the living. These songs let the living get in touch with the world of the dead to ask for a successful sowing or to have ones desires or questions answered. Sometimes these songs are used to ask for a happy marriage. Part two will include religious songs and laments traditionally sung during funerals as well as thereafter over the deceased's grave. Whoever sung them gave expression to their sadness and regret, and prayed for the redemption of the deceased's earthly sins.
