Kim Soo-nam – A Photography Exhibition
The trip we are taken on by Kim Soo-nam, a photographer, is a search for traditions of the Korean shamanism. Kut rituals recorded by the artist in more than one hundred thousand photos create their own world in which art and reality interweave, and symbols guide us through the ancient culture of inhabitants of the Korean Peninsula. The exhibit of black-and-white pictures proves the mastery of Kim Soo-nam’s photographic skills and artistic sensitivity. The two-coloured vision of the world emphasises the expressiveness of the form, sharpens the character of the images and makes them timeless. The way of perceiving and recording the environment with an exceptional suggestiveness so typical for Kim Soo-nam’s photos highlights emotions, imparts movement and depth. His pictures are the living portrait of rituals, a look at the ephemeral reality of prayers, and he himself is the master of painting human emotions with light. The ability to delve into another person allowed the artist, the Great Shaman of Photography, to capture, on the photographic plate, the moments when the two worlds, the material and the spiritual one, meet.
