After having great popular success with the group Sistars, I deliberately chose freedom and independence – a difficult but enticing creative path. I began to work on my own material in London where I was studying at the London Music School. It was then that I realised how demanding and captivating singing is and how much commitment and sacrifice it requires.
For my solo album Maupka comes home I collaborated with Envee, a producer known for working with the Niewinni Czarodzieje collective, along with musicians Wojtek Traczyk, Piotr Zabrodzki, Hubert Zemler, Jurek Zagórski and other equally wonderful people.
Now we are working together on my second album, which is a great pleasure and honor for me. Three more vocalists, Kasia Dereń, Magda Kowalska and Kasia Piszek sing with us when we perform live. On stage I perform the songs from my debut record, including the single Lion Girl, a few covers, Keziah Jones, Omar, Miriam Makeba, and obviously with the coming of the next album I also unveil some new songs. My musicians are people of passion with a strong jazz background and they participate in numerous projects, so you never know what will happen during their improvisations. In short, my music is the fruit of an exchange between vocalists with a bent for soul, musicians with jazz leanings and Envee’s ideas, because he knows best how to entertain an audience.
I am aware that the Brave Festival presents projects that are diverse and not part of the mainstream, but I believe my music will fit in. Music makes dreams come true and I dream of being among people who have drunk music in since childhood and can see its spiritual aspect. My music is rooted in the Polish tradition, something I realised during my guest performance with Kapela ze wsi Warszawa on their album Infinity. (I met after years with my friend Maja Kleszcz. I was a bit apprehensive, but the results brought me much joy). I guess it’s too late for me to be re-baptised, to change my style and embrace an entirely Polish music. I’ve been deep in “black” music too long. Since I was ten, my guru and my teacher has been William Hannibal Means, an American tenor singing in the Vienna Opera, raised in a house where gospel was sung, with musical ties to Nina Simone. This is my Karma, I have to struggle and seek my musical heart around the world.
There is a Hindu theory that the previous life of our consciousness determines our present place on the earth and our interests. When I believe this to be true, and the symbolism of this idea seems so beautiful and poetic to me, then I’m sure this is not my first life either as a human or as a musician. Maupka comes home is a story of returning to one’s inner self, it is a contemplation of music, its sense and its meaning in life; it is about the primacy of emotions over reasoning, self-discipline and the lion’s strength that women hold. As an epilogue we included a recording of Duke Ellington's Come Sunday featuring Marcin Masecki and Wojtek Traczyk. I feel that music is something my soul will never be free of, and I will still return to Africa, India and America, just to sing and dance my entire life.
I am thrilled to think about participating in the Brave Festival. I see it as a sort of challenge, the challenge of facing the truth. Wrocław is like a strong coffee, it is an extremely stimulating city that pulsates with positive energy. Although my music might have become more challenging, I identify myself with the idea of being Brave – being oneself. I will bring all my heart and passion to the festival just like my musicians will. Using our modern language of jazz and soul we will sing legends of freedom and happiness for our old Planet.
