Polish Traditional Religious Songs – a Reconstruction of Energy
Koncert i nocne czuwanie
Jan Bernad
For centuries, this musical energy was invoked during holidays. It endowed the surrounding reality with a different dimension connected with a feeling of wonder and eternity, and an expectation of something that in today’s language could be called a miracle. Religious songs sung by people in the Catholic Church had the same force that accompanied mystery plays performed since the beginning of man in many cultures. The history of traditional song, including religious traditional song, is a history of energies lost. By rejecting old cultures we have rejected the old ways of experiencing the world, and more importantly, ways of singing which invoke an ancient energy. These energies are embedded in us – they continue to resonate although we have forgotten them.
In Poland, the tradition of long songs was very dynamic even in the 1960s. During Holy Week at night in hundreds of churches people sang passion songs dozens of verses long. Adam Mickiewicz’s Dziady contains an all-night ritual of purification of sins interwoven with incantations. Nowadays, it seems that all-night vigils are natural in our spiritual tradition, and yet these days this practice has been all-but forgotten. Taking the all-night vigil as our starting point we will present a selection of divine services and Polish traditional religious songs. This selection will allow us to celebrate the sound, liberate the songs’ energy and gather the community without haste or the pressure of time.
Polish Traditional Religious Songs – a Reconstruction of Energy will present concerts and a Night Vigil, during which divine services, as well as various genres of Polish religious songs will be sung by the Ensemble of the International School of Traditional Music of the Borderland Foundation and Centre of Intercultural Creative Initiatives “Crossroads” (“Rozdroża”).

In co-operation with: Ewa Grochowska, Monika Mamińska, Zofia Szyrajew.
