Prayers of the Republic
Manuscripts and handwritten sacred texts from the Ossolineum archives, Wroclaw

The Ossoliński National Institute invites you to listen carefully to the spiritual and religious Dialogue symbolically presented at this exhibition. The Bible – not only the basis for Judaism and Christianity, but also a masterpiece recognized by Muslims – will be presented as a reference point for those who will participate in this conversation, regardless of their nationality: Polish, Jewish, Armenian, Russian, Tatar, Lithuanian, or Garcherman. The audience will be offered an opportunity to explore the diversity of all the major translations of the Holy Bible that are significant for Polish culture. This exhibition will comprise the major Catholic editions produced by Jan Leopolita and Jakub Wujek, as well as protestant versions including the Brest Bible, the Nesvizh (Nieświeska) Bible, the Danzig Bible and the Orthodox Ostrog Bible. Translations of extracts from the Book of Psalms written by the legendary King David will demonstrate the variety of creeds and languages present in the territory of ancient Poland. The Psalters, printed separately in Poland, were not only published in Hebrew and translated into Polish by Jan Kochanowski, Mikołaj Rej, Walenty Wróbel and Maciej Rybiński, but also boasted Old Church Slavonic, Armenian and Arabic versions. These compositions presented include are the oldest Polish songs: Bogurodzica (The Mother of God), Pieśń o Zmartwychwstaniu (the Song of Resurrection), the most beautiful prayers written by poets, including Jan Kochanowski’s hymn Czego chcesz od nas Panie (What Do You Wish from Us Lord), the songs by Franciszek Karpiński: Kiedy ranne wstają zorze (When the Morning Lights Arise), and Wszystkie nasze dzienne sprawy (All the Cares of Our Daily Life), which are still sung today, as well as the  wonderful Christmas carol: Bóg się rodzi (God is Born). These presented relics will bring the visitors to the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Enlightenment periods.

The opening: 3rd of July, 2 p.m.
The exhibition will be open from 4th of July to 30th of August, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. After 11th of July the exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Saturday, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., during the festival – everyday.
