Prison Theatre “On the Way...”
Macbeth
The Prison Theatre Company “On the Way …” was founded by Krzysztof Papis, an actor and director, with the inmates of the Kłodzko prison in 1998 as a part of his artistic and social project Art for Peace – Theatre as a catalyst. 'Making theatre in a prison is a tremendous challenge – but the founders were utterly convinced that it is worthwhile and useful. This is why I do it,' remarks Papis. The artistic meaning of these performances, though significant, is of secondary importance. The group claims that what is more important is what one may call the Art of Living. For them, theatre serves mainly as a catalyst for inner and outer transformation. It is not artistry but the human element that matters most. This group sees theatre and art as a vehicle for helping them explore their inner selves, their own path, their emotions, their way of communicating with themselves and others, as well as a way to search for answers to the questions that are essential to each of our lives. Performances by “On the way…” have already been seen by more than 5000 spectators from outside the prison. The figure is huge considering the context in which the performances are staged. All of the company's performances are the result of a long and complex process and are inspired by discussions, questions and the life experiences of the offenders. While working on new pieces, the group in the past has never used ready-made scripts. Over the 11 years of its existence the company has had 6 premieres. However there were actually much more, as many performances were recreated several times as if from scratch due to changes in the members of the group. Some prisoners went to other prisons, others were released. Macbeth is their first attempt to tackle a pre-written text. Many months of reading the text and many questions ensued … 'Who would Macbeth be today? When are we like him? Is there a Macbeth in each of us? We searched for a way of placing the story of Macbeth in a present-day context. Many viewers tell us after the play that they were moved and thought seriously about the essence of Shakespeare's Macbeth. It’s a huge compliment to us.' says the director. In 2007, “On the Way…” earned the distinction of being invited to stage their Macbeth during the Dialog International Theatre Festival in Wrocław. Macbeth as presented by the inmates from the Kłodzko prison was performed among several of the greatest performances in the world.
