Source traditions of Tantric Buddhism

The monks from Sherab Ling in northern India represent the Kagyu lineage – one of the four main Tibetan Buddhist schools. Their monastery in the Himachal Pradesh hills is called Kuang Ting Tai Situ – meaning 'far reaching, unshakable, great master, he who leads'. In the Kagyu lineage, the so-called 'school of oral transmission,' direct contact between master and student is cultivated. The original source of the teachings of the Kagyu is an Indian yogi – Tilopa – who received his knowledge directly from Buddha Vajradhara.  The current, twelfth Tai Situpa Péma Tönyö Nyinjé, the spiritual caretaker of the Sherab Ling, was found as a child thanks to the guidance of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa (1924-1981). At the age of six, a year after the famous escape of the Dalai Lama, Pema managed to get from occupied Tibet to India. At the age of twenty-two, having received all of the teachings of the 16th Karmapa, he founded Sherab Ling after the model of the Palpung order. During the this year's Festival we will host fourteen monks who will create a colourful Mahakala mandala for the citizens of Wrocław and the guests of the Brave Festival. The mandala, called dul-tson-kyil-khor in Tibetan, is probably one of the most recognizable rituals of Tantric Buddhism. These intricate mandalas created over days and sometimes even weeks only to be destroyed by ritual movements symbolize the transitory nature of all existence. Each mandala is not just a religious creation, but also a work of art – the act of creation is unforgettable to those who have witnessed it. For many years this Buddhist ritual was kept secret, however the 14th Dalai Lama, striving to preserve the heritage of his nation, began to allow outside participation in some aspects of this Buddhist art. In Sanskrit, the word mandala means “the centre and that which encircles it”. Indeed, a mandala consists of a circle with a square harmoniously fitted inside it, and a central point.  A mandala may be treated as symbolising our life, in which we are the centre of the world around us. During this year’s Brave Festival, the monks from Sherab Ling will also present traditional cham dances, which are a yogic practise and reflect the purification of the environment, mandala offering, invocation of protectors and the vanquishing of evil.
In cooperation with Lama Rinchen
Creating mandala will take place in Design Gallery on Świdnicka Street, between 3rd and 11th of July, from 10.00 a.m. till 6 p.m.
