Song of the Goat Theatre.

Song of the Goat Theatre is an international troupe made up of actors from Finland, Scotland, Wales, England and Poland. Established in 1996 by Anna Zubrzycka and Grzegorz Bral, the company follows the long tradition of Polish laboratory theatre. Focussing on the search for truth in movement and voice, Song of the Goat Theatre have developed an their own unique method of training and performance called 'Co-ordination'. This training forms the syllabus of a post-graduate MA in Acting offered in conjunction with Manchester Metropolitan University. During this year Brave Festival edition Song of the Goat invites for two performances: Lacrimosa and Macbeth. Lacrimosa takes as it's reference one of the cruellest events in the history of medieval France. In 1485 the town of Arras was struck by a plague which killed half of its inhabitants.  Grzegorz Bral, the director of Song of the Goat, found his main literary inspiration for Lacrimosa in Andrzej Szczypiorski’s Mass for the City of Arras. He was also influenced by Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and the Revelation of St John the Divine. The musical layer of the performance was built primarily of motifs from Mozart's Requiem. The present anthropological version of Lacrimosa consists of three parts. This tripartite division of the performance was inspired by Wassily Kandinsky who, while creating his paintings, distinguished three phases of the process: inspiration, improvisation and structure. Macbeth, the fourth performance by Song of the Goat is an attempt to discover the musicality of Shakespeare's poetry, and through this the roots of tragedy. Through their engagement with the colours and sounds of Shakespearean text the actors explore deeply the nature of drama. As Grzegorz Bral says in his introduction to the performance, these are 'Reflections on Macbeth'. The song-score based on A Filetta's arrangements of ancient Corsican polyphony, the music of Rafał Habel, the actors’ voices, the images,  the light, the movement of the actors around (and at one point above) the space, the actor's physical skills, and of course Anna Zubrzycka’s wonderful Lady Macbeth create a powerful and harmonious whole.
