Artist
Toumani Diabate
Toumani Diabate is one of the most important musicians in contemporary Africa. He plays the oryginal instrument “kora.” It's an instrument made of a large gourd that has been cut in half then covered with stretched cow hide to get resonance. A bridge is then attached to the hide similarly to a guitar or a lute. Kora's sound resembles that of a harp. Thank Toumani, this popular in Western Africa instrument is gaining new audience around the globe. Not only is the unusual character of the instrument delightful to the listeners, but primarly it's the extraordinary virtuosity of the artist, and his enormous creativity in combining traditional African music with influence of soul and blues.
Tumani's remarkable talent can be attributed to the fact that he's the 71st generation Kora player in his family. His father - Sidiki Diabaté – was a legendary African musician who received an allotment of land close to the president's palace in newly independent Republic of Mali in recognition for his musical achievements with Kora.
Born in 1965 in the capital of Mali – Bamako – he turned out to be a musical genius. He started to play kora when he was 5. His first performance in front of an audience took place just 8 years later.
In his music he joins African tradition with sounds acquired during his European tournées with kora. Pieces of African music entwined with flamenco, blues or soul played on kora, arouse deep emotions among audiences of many countries.
Toumani has been rewarded on many occasions for popularising kora music.
One concert will take place in the Musical Theatre CAPITOL on Friday the 10th of July at 9:00PM.
