Gogo Milungu Group. Spirits of Tanzania. Taming Ritual
The Wagogo (or Gogo) are a Bantu ethnic and linguistic group based in the Dodoma region of central mainland Tanzania. In 1992 the Gogo population was estimated to number over one million. Central to Gogo spiritual life is the relationship between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Most of the Gogo rituals concern their relationship to Milungu - the collective of spirits of the dead. Milungu is considered the supreme being, the creator. The great spirit of all men – a spirit formed by adding together all the departed souls. The creator of all things, Milungu gives good things to humankind. He is invisible – it is not known what he looks like. Although to an individual Gogo the most important Milungu are those derived from his or her ancestors – particularly the father – in fact the concept of Milungu is always generalised – by contacting one Milungu one contacts all Milungu. One cannot call on a spirit, only on the spirits. By sacrificing to one name or set of names of kinsmen or kinswoman a Gogo contacts the whole world of the dead. Milungu interfere in the world of the living in various ways – by causing infants to cry, by causing minor accidents, by causing some illnesses and by altering the mood and behaviour of herd-beasts. Such omens must be interpreted by a diviner who will work out which Milungu are unhappy and what needs to be done to propitiate them – usually a sacrifice of beer and beasts. During the Brave Festival the musicians and dancers will enact a number of rites including a ritual asking the Gogo gods, spirits and ancestors to protect the musical instruments they are performing on, the performer themselves, the people back home in the land of the Wagogo and, indeed, the audience attending the Brave Festival. The performance will include the Wagogo filimbi flute, performed to please and placate the spirits. Also, the various zeze, string instruments, ilimba thumb-pianos and horns will be part of the ensemble of musicians.
