Theatre Zar.
The Theatre Zar Association was formed through three years of expeditions, training and rehearsals. Between 1999 and 2003 the group collected the musical material for their first performance during expeditions to Georgia, Bulgaria and Greece. During the Brave Festival we will see Gospels of Childhood. Fragments on intimations of immortality from recollections of early childhood and Caesarean section. Essays on Suicide. The primary impulse to begin work on Gospels of Childhood arose from the group's interest in the Gnostic ideas of early Christianity. Gospels of Childhood is an attempt to tell the story of the “afterlife of the body” after love, after humiliation, after death; this is a story about an impossible resurrection. The texts used in this performance are taken from the little-known Apocrypha of Mary Magdalene, Philip and Thomas, and also fragments from Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Simone Weil. Gospels of Childhood incorporates songs collected by the ensemble during their expeditions to Georgia, Bulgaria and Greece between 1999 and 2003. Caesarean section. Essays on Suicide - the title of this performance is essentially a metaphor for the compulsion towards and the condition of suicide. It is addresses the ability to keep breathing at that very moment when one feels pieces of glass in one's veins working their way towards the heart. The musical structure of Caesarian Section was developed from a foundation of polyphonic Corsican songs into which Bulgarian, Romanian, Icelandic and Chechen motifs have been woven. The energy of the musical score of this performance is heavily influenced by Eric Satie and his ability to wring the intensity from every drop of sound. Inspired by Satie, the traditional musical material in this performance has been worked into a modern form and supplemented with an intense movement score.
