A dramatic film from Brazil appearing in many best picture lists last year. Directors João Dumans and Affonso Uchoa created a ballad, full of lyricism and respect for physical labour, about the life of modern workers who by the sweat of their brow manufacture goods consumed all over the world. This film about the beauty, struggle and courage of life starts when teenage Andre, living in a Brazilian industrial town, is rushing on his bike. He is riding to collect a few things from the house of Cristiano, who got injured in an accident in an aluminium factory. In his house he finds a diary in which the man has given an account of the last ten years of his life. In this moment Araby transforms into a road film and we follow Cristiano: we join him on his journey in search of money, his time in prison, we witness his hard work and his love. This beautifully filmed story elevates the life of a simple man to the rank of poetry, and the acting of Aristides de Sousa – an amateur whose life story is similar to Cristiano’s, whom he portrayed – adds authenticity to the film and captures the heart.
Movie in Portuguese with Polsih and English subtitles.
