dir. Aleksei German, Russia 2013

One of the most waited for Russian titles after the fall of the Soviet Union has an interesting history. The time from the first day of shooting till the film`s premiere was 14 years. Production problems made it impossible for the director – Aleksei German – to see the premiere, but in the last stage of filmmaking he was replaced by his son, also a director, Aleksei German Junior (Paper Soldier, Dovlatov). Public interest this project enjoyed from the very beginning resulted from both, German`s position, regarded by many as a genius, and the popularity of a science fiction novel by the Strugatsky brothers published in 1963, which the artist decided to transfer to the screen. The main character, Don Rumata, moves from the Earth to a planet whose level of development resembles our Middle Ages. He is an observer and civilization researcher, but confronted with cruel terror it is hard for him to remain impartial. He starts to support the oppressed citizens of Arkanar. The three-hour science fiction epic – like all other German`s works – was made on black and white film and brings to mind Andrzej Żuławski`s On the Silver Globe, also finished years after. This insane total film guarantees almost narcotic visions – trance which only the greatest in cinematography can achieve.

Movie in Russian with Polsih and English subtitles.
