BRAVE: forbidden CINEMA
dir. Michael Glawogger, Monika Willi, Austria/Germany 2017

Author of the famous “work trilogy” (Megacities, Workingman`s Death, Whores’ Glory) Michael Glawogger decided to set off on a year-long journey without a plan, to make a film without a title. His navigation led him across countries and regions (including the Balkans, the Eastern coast of Africa) unknown to people from Western Europe: areas of destitution, war-stricken or facing the effects of natural disasters. He looked at people from the Global South, who are still engaged in physical work and do the easiest things with their own hands. As fate would have it, the director died of malaria in Liberia due to a wrong diagnosis. From the footage and notes Glawogger collected, the finished film was put together, two and a half years after his death, by Monika Willi. The author’s collaborator of many years, known for her cooperation with Michael Haneke, tried to convey the critical outlook of the author of Workingman’s Death. The final effect escapes the trap of topic banality that lurks for similar artistic projects. Glawogger said goodbye to his audiences in superb style.
