“On the road to Mandalay, Where the flyin'-fishes play, An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!” – wrote Rudyard Kipling in his famous poem. Today’s Road to Mandalay has little to do with the nostalgic vision by the English writer, eulogizing the beauty of former colonies. Its director Midi Z, who comes from Burma but has lived in Taiwan for years, combines drama and documentary techniques in his work. His latest film is rather an attempt to poetically tell about migrations. It is the everyday experience of many people, especially in Asia and Africa (and not, as suggested by the media, of people arriving in Europe). Like many other Burmese, the two young protagonists of The Road to Mandalay come to Bangkok hoping to find work and money. Lianqing (played by beautiful Wu Ke-xi) and Guo (a popular Taiwanese actor Ko Kai) first meet on the border between Burma and Thailand, which they both cross illegally. Finding themselves in a similar situation, they start to help each other and become closer. Will love grow between these two people fighting for a better future or will ambition prevail? Screened at festivals in Venice, Toronto and São Paulo, it stuns with its beautiful photography, score and subtle psychological portrait of the modern working class.

Movie in Thai, Burmese, English, Chinese with Polish and English subtitles.
